Cyclist killed by texting driver

Sad case from 2015. Christopher Gard was jailed for 9 years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Lee Martin taking part in an organised cycle event was knocked from his bicycle by Gard who was sending a text at the time.

This case however caused further controversy as he had been in court only 6 weeks previously for a mobile phone offence. He pleaded extreme hardship if he lost his licence and the magistrates accepted his case and did not take his licence from him. Notwithstanding the court appearance Gard had 6 other mobile phone offences recorded against him. This case raised questions about how seriously the matter of mobile phone use by drivers was being taken by the courts.
